It all started with a Dog-N-Suds restaurant in Newton, Illinois in 1961. For thirty years J.B. & Marla Simmons continued their franchise with Burger Chef, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and Rax Restaurants. By 1990, J.B. and Marla Simmons decided it was time to concentrate their efforts elsewhere. They wanted to build a restaurant where people could relax in a casual, laid back, family atmosphere. Thus the 1950’s were born.

Having grown up during the 1950’s, J.B. remembered the days of early rock-n-roll playing on the jukebox. He remembered families sitting around the newly invented television watching The Honeymooners & The Ed Sullivan Show. He remembered millions of fans screaming at the first American idol: Elvis. It was this exciting history and nostalgia that J.B. wanted to reproduce in their new restaurant. Now, all that was needed was food.

During a family vacation to Memphis, Tennessee, J.B. and Marla were introduced to the city’s world famous bar-b-q. To learn the art of ‘quing, J.B. worked with a bar-b-q restaurant in Tennessee where he developed his recipes. Finally, a name for their restaurant was needed. After a few attempts, Marla combined the names of their two sons: SHawn and tYLER. Finally, Shyler’s opened on March 1, 1991.

Today, Shyler’s continues its family tradition with the hands-on operation of J.B. and Marla and their oldest son, Shawn, and his wife, Susan. We strive to exceed each and every guest’s expectations and hope that your experience with us is memorable.
